KL Tower- Completed

Posted on June 29th, 2006 in Announcement, General by yeehan

Yay. I have finished constructing my second structure (First being The Eiffel Tower). It’s almost exactly one year ago I completed my first masterpiece. How things can be so coincident. Anyway, this structure is relatively easy to construct as mentioned in the previous post. Just the hard part is cutting circle out of balsa plank. The time spent for me to build the Kuala Lumpur Tower is approximately 10 hours. Too long? Of course. The 10 hours include 5 episodes of Princess Hours (a new korean drama which I’m watching now) and waiting time for the wood glue to dry. It’s really enjoyable and fulfilling to see my complete structure. How do I go about in the whole process?

In constructing structures, it’s important to search for images of the intended structure. I googled the images and found a few angles and parts of KL Tower. Next, draw out the layout plan- both side view and top view. This is relatively easy. Now, what is more challenging will be scaling the intended structure. I estimated based on the images and the amount of wood that I have (Wood is scarce). Just do some ratio calculations based on the images that you use. The tools and materials that I use in the whole process are pen knife (it has to be real sharp), wood glue (a normal one that can stick hard should be fine) and finally, balsa wood (a type of very light wood which you can destroy easily). My friend recommended bass wood but I find it a bit hard to cut through using pen knife. Balsa wood should be fine, of course, the thickness should take into consideration. In this structure, it’s wood thickness is 3/32 inches.

After that, start constructing. I will usually divide my structure into a few parts and combine them together later. For instance, in this structure, the parts are the base (with all the roofs), the middle long pillar, the small curvature between the pillar and the top st part, and finally the upper portion with the antenna. You can choose any portion you like, as long as you can put them together at the end without much trouble. Few hours of hardwork later, there you go, a fine home-made masterpiece. Yeap, Satisfaction is in the air. =p Anyway, below is the picture of my structure.

Constructing KL Tower

Posted on June 28th, 2006 in Announcement, General by yeehan

I have started on my structure construction, although it’s kind of behind schedule. I spent my evening last night to buy the materials at Art Friend, in Bras Basah Complex. I spent around $20.00 for the thin wooden plank and hardwood dowel. My friend initially told me to buy bass wood instead of balsa wood, but I still opt for the latter, reason being cheaper and even though it’s easier to break (you can bite through the wood), I can cut through balsa wood easier than bass wood.

The drawing plan was a easy but calculating and planning the length of wood required was a hectic. I have to make sure that I utilise the plank to the utmost. It’s not cheap (for 3/32″ x 4″ x 36″ balsa wood, it cost me $5.05). I went to search in another shop (Sagacity) to compare the price and yeap, it’s still cheaper in Art Friend. Moreover, there are a variety of wood and other handcraft material sold there. The wood there is of better quality too.

Although I spent quite a lot on these stuff, but I think it’s worth it when I view my complete structure (that is provided I finish them and well, they look nice) I’m now around one quarter through my KL Tower. It looks relatively easy but the main obstacle that I face is cutting circle out of the wood. That’s a real headache, given that I’m just using pen-knife. Other than that, I foresee no other major challenges for me in this structure, maybe just some symmetrical problems My strcuture will be quite small compared to my Eiffel Tower (see my old post). It’ll be around 40cm after completion. I’ll upload the photo of completed structure when I’m done. After this, my next target will be Shanghai Oriental Tower. Gonna talk more about it in my coming posts.

Korean Movie: The Guy Was Cool

Posted on June 25th, 2006 in Korean, Movies by yeehan

The 2004 movie (also known as “He Was Cool”) is about a cheerful high school student named Han Ye Won (Jung Da Bin from My 19 Year Old Sister in Law) and a bully named Ji Eun Song (Song Seung Hun from Autumn in My Heart). One day, Ye-Won leaves a message on the school website to reply to Eun Song’s impolite message. She is shocked when someone calls her mobile and threatens her. Ye-won tries to run away from him but Eun Song wants her to be his girlfriend when they accidentally kissed.

The storyline continues fast; at the beginning Ye-won doesn’t have any feelings for Eun Song, she even rejects his invitation to come to his birthday party. Unknowingly, Eun Song has fallen in love with her. Yeap, as expected since this is a Korean romance/comedy movie. In this movie, Seung Hun acted “cooly” and “macho”. There are two fight scenes, one is between him and more than 6 opponents where he won.

Although he is rude and bad-tempered, Eun Song always pardons Ye-Won’s faults and clumsiness. Love is blind. =p One day he found out that Ye-Won went out with Kim Han Sung, his senior and the one he hates a lot (you’ll know why he hates him in one of the scenes). The broken-hearted Ji-Eun Song decides to leave Korea following his mother to the USA. So, will the two be together? Don’t assume that all Korean movies have the same ending. =) Watch the movie and find the answer.

Locked in!! (almost)

Posted on June 21st, 2006 in Uncategorized by yeehan

I'm currently in my room at Old Kent Ridge Hall. Sadly, I have to spend my time here while waiting for the locksmith to come instead of going out to settle my more important stuff. This temporary location for me during this vacation is old and needs maintainance. The lock for my room is not working, meaning that the door's lock is locked, but the door is still ajar. So, now I cannot close my door nor leave my room, unless I risk my belongings to be stolen. Just told the management office staff and he tried his best to repair it. But still, I have to wait for the expert to come to unlock my room so that I can lock it back. Sounds confusing? Yea. I was lucky (or smart) when I sense that the lock seems to be in bad shape when I tried to lock my door on my way out. Instead of leaving the place, I tried to turn the key when the door is ajar and STUCK!! Yeap, luckily, if not, I'll be the one of the rarest case of locked in. So, here I am, waiting for him to come and unlock my door.

I am tired, exhausted from the past few days of "work". The few of us have been busy slotting in mail, pasting stamps and labels, and stamping the OSA name and NUSSU emblem on the envelopes. It sounds easy, right? Just slotting in and you can just do it within seconds, if not minutes. But imagine doing that for 5500 envelopes!!! That's crazy!!! First day was fine, around 18 people came, and we finished slotting and pasting 2000 pieces. No stamping yet. Second day, around 9 people came, and we finished another 2500, also no stamping yet. Third day, I was shocked when I went there… TWO people!!! luckily as time goes by, more people came to help. In total, 7 people.

It's not really my jobscope, I personally feel. It should be team work, effort by the six project committee members (around 100 of them). I'm not complaining about helping out. I do not mind helping out. Just that I am disappointed with their attitude. I think these minority of people are just too selfish. What can I do about them? NOTHING!! Well, just take life easy and yeap, the proverb is true~ “Only I can change my life. No one can do it for me.”

And guess what, by the time I finish this sentence, my door is repaired. The locksmith just came to change a new lock and it's working fine again. Although this place is old, the staff are efficient after all. Now, I can happily go out and do my work without having to worry about my door.

Korean Movie: Calla

Posted on June 20th, 2006 in Korean, Movies by yeehan

This is a 1999 movie starring Seon-woo (Song Seung-Hun from Autumn in My Heart) and Ji-hee (Kim Hee-seon). Seon-woo receives calla (a type of flower) every morning and wants to find out who his secret admirer is. One day, he goes to a nearby florist’s where he meets Ji-hee. He falls in love with her at first sight, thinking she is the one who is sending him flowers. Seon-woo asks Ji-hee to go on a date and “she” agrees. He arrives at the meeting place only to find that Ji-hee is held hostage and, to his horror, killed before his eyes. Sadly he walked away and on his way down the elevator, he is transported back in time where he has the chance to prevent this mishap from happening; to change history. This movie actually incorporated the theory about going back in time, how things going to happen and shows that there is always a reason and cause for the events that has happened. Quite interesting story line but the speech and expression were rather dull. But great effort for the plot in the movie. The theme song is very nice= “Je m’appelle Helene”. You can hear it from the clip below.
