FIFA World Cup 2006

No Comments Posted in: Sports | June 11, 2006

I spent my time watching the England-Paraguay match with about 100 others in NUS Staff Club on Saturday night. It was a good move by Staff Club to have all the matches aired ‘live’. Well, I suppose it was a good money making move for them based on yesterday’s attendance. But it could also be due to weekends. The fee was $2.00 per entry with one free drink (non-alcoholic of course). I bet the staff there never expect so many to turn up. They were scrambling to look for extra chairs/sofas for the enormous crowd. I was one lucky lad. Having to arrive late for the game, me and my two friends were thinking that we would most likely be standing for the rest of the match. But, to our surprise, the staff there went to another room to search for chairs, and he found three sofas instead. Wow, it was cool and having to arrive late and getting sofas to watch the match. The match was not as exciting as the opening match between Germany and Costa Rica. But there were still some exciting moments with Lampard’s long shots and Stewart Downing’s sprint.

So, am I suffering from World Cup fever? I guess not. I think I’ll be most likely reading the news and watch the match highlights from websites. Here are some websites which is quite okay for those who do not have time to watch the midnight/ early dawn games.

The first one is the official website for World Cup- FIFA World Cup (with Yahoo!) Click here to access. What is additional feature about this website is that it has videos which highlight the important moments in each match. There are additional news segment which reports about moment of the day, player of the day and goal of the day. Well, this website seems good. Moreover, it’s the official website of 2006 FIFA World Cup.

Another website to consider- ESPN Soccernet. Click here to access. What is good about this website then? It has the latest news for the day. And all the table standings are on the main page. You can find news arranged according to their groups.

If you want another website, here’s on. BBC Sport World Cup 2006. Click here to access. I find this website nothing extra ordinary. But it has this virtual replay- an animated highlight of the matches. And there’s this World Cup blog. You can post your comments and views there. Sounds cool?

Well, I guess I’ll watch some important matches ‘live’, provided the timing is right. Yeap, and I will watch the final game as well, hopefully.
