Pluto “demoted”

Posted on August 26th, 2006 in Announcement, Science & Technology by yeehan

This is the latest news which shocked the astronomical world when it was announced on 24 August 2006. International Astronomical Union (IAU) declared on Thursday onwards that there are only eight (8) planets which orbit around the sun; Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune. So, what happened to Pluto? After seven decades as the ninth and outermost planet, it’s now “demoted” to a category known as dwarf planets, which comprises of 2003 UB313 (Xena which was themed the ‘tenth’ planet) and large asteriod Ceres. Pluto was discovered on February 18 1930 by a 24-year-old American astronomer, Clyde Tombaugh.

IAU’s ruling will rewrite schoolbooks and reshape notions about space topography. All the while throughout the years, we were taught that Pluto is a unique planet; taking more than 200 years to complete its orbit and orbiting at a tilted angle as compared to the other 8 planets. Well, I think their decision to scrap the title was a hard one. But, by doing so, it will stop the inclusion of larger than Pluto objects found in the Kuiper Belts as planets. As telescopes get better, we will be seeing further. It would be better than having to modify textbooks every year like the tenth, eleventh, twelveth, etc.. planets.

A sidetrack, Pluto now has three moons: Charon, discovered in 1978, and the tiny Nix and Hydra, spotted in 2005 by US astronomers using the orbiting Hubble Space Telescope. Charon is about half the size of Pluto, you can see the quite bright ’star’ in the picture. Nix and Hydra can be spotted as tiny stars at the right side of the photo. However, even though the ruling has changed, it does not matter to Pluto or me. Pluto will still continue to orbit the sun as it always does. I’ll always remember Pluto as the unique planet.

When is a planet not a planet?

Following is the text approved by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) at an assembly in Prague on Thursday that defines a planet and other Solar System objects.

The resolution reduces the number of acknowledged planets from nine to eight, downgrading Pluto to the new status of “dwarf planet.”

“Contemporary observations are changing our understanding of planetary systems, and it is important that our nomenclature for objects reflect our current understanding.

“This applies, in particular, to the designation ‘planets’. The word ‘planet’ originally described ‘wanderers’ that were known only as moving lights in the sky. Recent discoveries lead us to create a new definition, which we can make using currently available scientific information.

“The IAU therefore resolves that ‘planets’ and other bodies in our Solar System be defined into three distinct categories in the following way:

“(1) A ‘planet’ (1) is a celestial body that (a) is in orbit around the Sun, (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, and (c) has cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit.

“(2) A ‘dwarf planet’ is a celestial body that (a) is in orbit around the Sun, (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape (2), (c) has not cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit, and (d) is not a satellite.

“(3) All other objects (3) except satellites orbiting the Sun shall be referred to collectively as ‘Small Solar-System Bodies’. (…)

“Pluto is a ‘dwarf planet’ by the above definition and is recognized as the prototype of a new category of trans-Neptunian objects.

Shout it out…

Posted on August 22nd, 2006 in Uncategorized by yeehan

I suddenly feel like posting a piece of my thought here after chatting with a friend of mine (You know who you are if you are reading this post). This friend mentioned about something which triggered my thoughts; on how to view my life journey, how to communicate well with people. Anyway, I just thought of shouting out (meaning open my mouth and shout) right now but well, blogging should be fine. What crosses my mind was that sometimes, one should stop and think of what are the things that one should do, what are the aims that one plans to achieve and most importantly, is what all one has done so far worthwhile for the time and effort that one has put in? At some point in life, you’ll just feel very tired, exhausted, worn out, brain dead… (I know it basically means the same thing; “Hey, I don’t feel like doing the stuff that I’m doing now). And you’ll start to think about lots of weird things and posting some nonsensical stuff which has no link at all.
“Am I doing what I’m supposed to like to do? Or am I just an actor behind the mask, just doing it for the sake of others and not for myself?” It’s definitely a commendable action to put others before one self, but at the same time, this is also a weakness. You should start caring about yourself first before taking care of others. Not that you are trying to be selfish, but rather, you are trying to protect yourself.

Too much commitments in life will not going to help you much either. Learn to let go some and focus on only few of them. You’ll never be able to do all the things in the world. But one of my friend mentioned before, how long do you need to learn to let go? 10 years down the road? That will be too late before you realise the precious things that you have lost during the time. It’s good to have high aspirations and dreams. No dreams are too high. But how many dreams can you afford to execute? Time is absolute and there’s no way that you can wind back and replace the time that you have lost. Although you may find yourself at the crossroads of your life, think what is best for you. You cannot take all the roads. But you should not regret on what you have chosen.

There’s one statement from last year’s NUS President Sports award winner, Victoria Cambell which I find inspiring. “I race with a philosophy not to regret what I do, meaning, not to cross the finishing line and think I could have done better.” Yeap, don’t you think so? At some point in life, when you find that you are down, I think sharing it with friends would be a good way. Although I have not done so, I think it’ll be effective in lessening one’s burden. Voicing it out in anywhere (like in this blog), could be useful. That’s why I’m trying out now. Having too many things to settle now, too much things to think of and at the same time busy with school work. Don’t you think life is much worse without so many things to bother you? Sometimes, I guess taking time off relaxing alone and get in touch with nature would help. Hopefully it will. Anyway, I’m fine here, just that feel like extracting this thought out of me. Thinking along the same line as me? Hope so. Time to disconnect myself from the world for the moment. Gonna rest now. Tired…

(This section is added on 26 August) My friend asked me to read my previous blog entries. I did so, and I totally forgot about the Mayonnaise Jar and the 2 Cups of Coffee.  How can I forget that?? Well, read it and you’ll know why. Thanks for reminding.

Korean Drama: Princess Hours (Goong)

Posted on August 19th, 2006 in Dramas, Korean by yeehan

Princess Hours or more commonly known as Goong (2006) is a romantic korean drama. Story evolves around the current Crown Prince of the Korean royal family (This is just a fiction. Korea is no longer ruled by kings). The story started off with a deal made by the previous emperor and his good friend that their grandchildren will get married to each other. At that time, the royal grandchild intended was Yul but when Yul’s dad (Crown Prince at that time) died in an accident, then Shin (Joo Ji Hoon), Yul’s cousin, took over as the Crown Prince after the emperor passed away.

But Shin has someone whom he liked (Hyo Rin) and decided to propose to her. Shin was rejected so he agreed to take up the arranged marriage with Chae-kyung (Yoon Eun Hye). However, he still hangs around with Hyo Rin quite often. Meanwhile, Yul who just came back from overseas, fell in love with Chae-kyung. As both Shin and Chae-kyung are now the Crown Prince and Princess of Korea, their quite intimate relations with Hyo Rin and Yul respectively creates rumours after rumours, which jeopardise the status of the royal family.

After living with Chae-kyung for long, Shin began to like her. But will he be too late to prevent Yul from taking her? At the end of this drama, there was a little unexpected twist but still an acceptable one. Anyway, Princess Hours 2 is in the making.

I like the two songs from the OST; Perhaps Love and Close with you. Both the songs can be heard from the Music Video below.

Project X by NUSSU

Posted on August 19th, 2006 in Announcement, Entertainment by yeehan

NUSSU just held her inaugural university wide bash at Zouk. All NUS students can enter by just flashing their matric card and guess what, there’s no cover charge. The sastifcation was to see Zouk having a sign stating- “Private Function”. I bet the other universities are jealous of our project. I personally felt that Thursday bash was a success. The turnout was great, the drink coupons were sold out (it was really very very cheap compared to usual bashes), the crowd enjoyed the night and yeap, everything went smoothly.

I think I was a bit extra yesterday; I looked retro and ready to Mambo all night long. Yeap, I was in the outfit worn in the 1970s. Guess there must be some time warp. Haha. Had an enjoyable time there with my two orientation groups; Kaka and Blizzard. Although I would admit that I don’t like to go clubbing. In fact, this is the first time I ever attended a pub. Oh no! What have I done!! But I was quite lucky yesterday, having to won some shopping vouchers after winning a contest. (Find the red dot by Lenovo). It was so funny. My partner was supposed to find the red dot on me after being blindfolded and guess what, when the MC was about to stick the dot on me, he said, “Let me put this up on your nose”. Diao… Haha. I think that’s why we won the first prize. Bleah..

Anyway, three cheers for the Project X committee. They have done a great job in organising this inaugural bash. A commendable effort by them. Oh ya, I have yet to blog on the previous freshmen orientation projects by NUSSU, namely Union Camp (where I was the councillor), Matric Fair, FIC, and Rag and Flag. Gonna blog at a later date.

In the meantime, look how cool or retro I was that night. I love this outfit. Yeah!! Me and my winning outfit/pose. Haha.

Me and Kaka at Zouk. This photo was taken inside Zouk. Only about half of us turned up. But, it’s still good enough.

Engin Orientation Week

Posted on August 14th, 2006 in General, Uncategorized by yeehan

I have just completed my Engin Orientation Week as the Group IC. My group is known as Blizzard (snowstorm, and yeap the same name as Warcraft’s creator). This year’s theme was about Stone Age known as Cenozoic. There were four houses; Earth, Fire, Wind, Water. Lack of Heart, if not, we’ll combine and form Captain Planet. Haha. That is a very nice cartoon in my younger days. Anyway, I’m part of Water house.

My group of freshmen were simply awesome. They are really a bunch of enthusiastic, caring and friendly freshie. The whole orientation week lasted one week, starting from 5th August to 12 August. We had in total 3 nights’ of stayover in campus. Though on the first day, less than 10 people stayed, but on the last day, about 16 out of 20 stayed to enjoy the fun. What is so special about them? I would say their spirit in playing the games and enjoying the orientation whole-heartedly. The whole feeling was rather different when I was the councillor for Union Camp as compared to the Engin Orientation Week. It could be due to the fact that I was just a councillor in UC but in Engin O Week, I was the group IC. I’m not saying that the freshie in UC was lousy, just that the freshie in Engin O Week has stronger bonding with me. Like I said, I was in-charge of the whole group; having to be responsible for them, making sure that the whole group unites and stays on.

On the second day, I lost my voice. Rather unfortunate as I still had few days to lead the group in cheering and talking to the freshie. But looking at how caring the freshie and councillors are to me, it doesn’t really matter although I can’t talk much after that with my harsh voice. I’m really thankful and touched by their care and kindness. My councillors bought me “Pei Pa Koa” and honey. And my freshie bought me “Pei Pa Koa” sweets, sorethroat lozenges and kept asking me to rest and not to do much cheering. I would really want to thank my group from the bottom of my heart.

Blizzard is definitely the most crazy and enthusiastic group that I have ever seen. From singing in the bus all the way from Sentosa to Mambo-ing all night, the group of freshmen has raised the spirit within the group. Without the freshie and councillors participation, I don’t think we could have won three prizes; best skit for scavenger hunt, most enthusiastic OG and highest flag day collection by an OG. Three cheers to them. Blizzard will definitely leave a deep impression in my heart years to come. Looking forward to having our OG outings soon.
