Korean Movie: A Millionaire’s First Love (2006)

Posted on December 31st, 2006 in Korean, Movies, Videos by yeehan

“Millionaire’s First Love is a story about Kang Jae-kyung (Hyun Bin), a typical spoilt rich kid; he’s arrogant, drives sporty cars, attends the big clubs, rides through school corridors on his motorcycle and - wait, that’s not typical at all is it? As his 18th birthday approaches he’s set to inherit his grandfather’s fortune, but that comes with a price. Jae-kyung is going to have to earn his fortune. His grandfather lays down an ultimatum; Jae-kyung is required to transfer to a new school in Gangwondo and graduate. Until then all access to his penthouse, cottage and credit cards is denied. Should he fail to graduate or drop out then he loses everything. With little choice he heads out to the countryside and a small town in which daily life is far removed from what he’s used to.

Shortly after settling into his new home he meets 19 year-old Choi Eun-whan (Lee Yeon-Hee), who just happened to run into him back in Seoul. They don’t exactly hit it off; he’s far too stubborn and cool for school, while she sees hope for him and sets out to make him see it for himself. As they eventually draw closer, thanks to a set of coincidences and school projects they learn more about one another, but soon a shattering revelation will change these people forever, or something. ”

At first, I thought it was going to be another comedy romantic movie. There’s another drama series; Prince’s First Love. So I thought the story-line would be the same too. But it turned out to be the opposite. This is the sad love korean movie. The movie is somewhat interesting. However, I think the director trying to convey a lot of messages in the movie. Not a good job though. I find it rather messy. It just felt a bit awkward on the whole plot. The flow wasn’t really there. The abrupt plot changes at the first half of the movie. I am still a bit blur about some scenes in the movie. At first was total blur, trying to figure out why the actress kept appearing near the guy. You’ll only find out about the reasons towards the second half of the story. Can be watched. After all, it’s only less than 2 hours.

My last review for the year. Will be going off for a short trip before school reopens. I’m trying something a bit ambitious during the trip. Just hope the weather is fine and everything comes into play. That’s all for now. Thank you to all those who has been reading my blog. Wishing everyone a Happy New Year 2007!!!

Korean Drama: Fantasy Couple (2006)

Posted on December 28th, 2006 in Dramas, Korean, Videos by yeehan

“Based on the 1987 movie, Overboard, starring Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, MBC brings us the story of Anna Jo (Han Ye Seul), a rude, feisty, and audacious American-bred heiress who can never be satisfied. She returns to Korea only to continue being a controlling wife to her already cowardly husband, Billy Park (Kim Sung Min). When her yacht gets stuck for repairs, she hires local handyman Jang Chul Soo (Oh Ji Ho) to fix her shower, but when they have a heated spat over her dissatisfaction and lack of payment, she pushes him overboard and dunks his tools into the ocean right along with him. Later, after a quarrel with Billy that threatens to end their marriage, she herself gets drunkenly pitched overboard and falls victim to a bad case of amnesia.

But in the hospital, she ends up beside none other than Jang Chul Soo, who’s still recovering from his own swim in the ocean for his lost tools. Unknown to her, he’s been raising his three orphaned nephews in their unkempt house and desperately needs a nanny. Taking advantage of her memory loss, he manages to convince her that she’s his live-in girlfriend and renames her Na Sang Shil. But he didn’t expect her spoiled selfishness to slowly turn into compassion. And he didn’t expect to fall overboard again—this time, for her. ”

This series is quite hillarious. Can’t imagine how such person could really live life. Always complaining on every single detail. And again, Korean movies/dramas have shown another storyline which potrays the power of love. Watch this series (16 episodes = about 16 hours) if you want to find out how love can change even the coldest person. How a rich and arrogant person can be so caring after going through hardship. Anyway, the supporting actress (Park Han-Byul as Yoo-Kyung) is quite cute. This series teach me another lesson and help me to understand life better. Do not be deceived by someone’s looks!!! This was shown when Yoo-Kyung pretend to be drunk to get Chul Soo’s attention and care. How scary this would be!! I think I’ll be like Chul Soo too unmistakenly. Oh ya, not forgetting the ever-entertaining Kang Ja. She’s a great character in Fantasy Couple. You’ll find her pretty interesting. =) Overall, another nice drama from Korea.

Korean Movie: My Tutor Friend (2003)

Posted on December 27th, 2006 in Korean, Movies, Videos by yeehan

“University student Su-weon (Kim Ha-neul) has been struggling with financing her education since she began her degree program, which has forced her to become a part-time tutor. In need of a new student since she was forced to quit her previous assignment with a group of sexually aggressive young men, Su-weon, with her mother’s assistance, finds a new job working with the son of a rich acquaintance. The young man, Ji-hun (Kwan Sang-woo), has spent the last three years studying in the United States and — due to his ambivalence toward his studies — he has failed to graduate as a senior in each of those three years. For his part, Ji-hun would rather not have anything to do with his new tutor and attempts to scare her away. Meanwhile, Su-weon is just as determined to accomplish her objectives with Ji-hun, and as the two wage psychological warfare with one another, an unexpected friendship and romance begins to bloom. My Tutor Friend was a smash hit in South Korea upon its release in early 2003, topping the box-office charts for five weeks after its debut.”

Personally, I did not find this movie as interesting as other korean romance comedy movie. (although at times, some scenes are funny). My Tutor Friend doesn’t really give me a strong impression. Some dubbed this movie as an heir apparent to My Sassy Girl, but I don’t think the two can be judged equally as both movies are of different genre. My Sassy Girl is the melondramatic while My Tutor Friend is more comedy and silly type. This movie can be entertaining so you can watch it if you have time.

Korean Movie: 100 Days With Mr Arrogant (2004)

Posted on December 24th, 2006 in Korean, Movies, Videos by yeehan

“This is a romantic, heart-warming story that tells a story of a young high-school girl, Ha-young (acted by Ha Ji-won) and a college guy name Hyung-joon (by Kim Jae-won). On one unlucky day, after being dumped by her boyfriend on their 100 day anniversary, Ha-young, who thought that her life couldn’t be more miserable than it already is, meet an ‘arrogant, mean, bigheaded, good-for-nothing-except-his-look, spoiled-rich-brat’, Hyung-joon. She was on her way home when she accidentally hits Hyung-joon’s head with a can of Coke that she kicked out of anger. To make matter even worse, Hyung-joon who was driving at that moment crashed his car into a wall. He demands Ha-young pay the damage of his car, which cost $3000. Somehow, Ha-young managed to escaped from the situation.

Unfortunately, while trying to escape, she dropped her wallet at the scene and suddenly, all that she knows is Hyung-joon begun shadowing her life, demanding money for his losses. Without having that much money, she agrees to become his slave for 100 days and sign an ‘Enslavement Agreement’ in order to pay for the damage that she made to his car. Then, the nightmare of tortures and slavery begins. She does everything for him from cleaning his house, assisting him in while he shops, doing all the chores, cleaning his car and even writing his school reports.

Ha-young puts up with all the humiliations and hardships for the sake of $3,000 she owes Hyung-joon. However, one day, she discovers that the car could be fixed with only 10 bucks! This is when Ha-young the ‘poor little slave girl’ transforms herself into the ‘goddess of revenge’! She takes her revenge on Hyung-joon starting with his car. However, the joy of victory lasts only short time. To her surprise, Hyung-joon appears before her own eyes at her very home as her new tutor! Then the new kind of ’slavery’ begins in a form of teacher vs. student.

Her miserable life continues as Hyung-joon takes advantage of the situation to use her as his slave once again. As far as Ha-young know, Hyung-joon brings her nothing but misery and hardship. She is forced to become his slave. But little that she know that, as they spend more time together, they become even closer than they could imagine and thus inseparable. Only when Hyung-joon suddenly disappears that Ha-young finally realized that he meant so much to her. What is the caused of Hyung-joon’s disappearance? Will they be able to meet again?”

The movie was rather abrupt towards the end. Quite sudden and fast pace. The show did not really catch my attention. Watch it if you have time to spare.

Korean Movie: The Classic (2002)

Posted on December 19th, 2006 in Korean, Movies, Videos by yeehan

“Ji-hae (Song Ye-Jin from “The Art of Seduction”) and Soo-kyoung are friends attending the same university and both have a crush on Sang-min who is in their drama club. The more clamorous and outgoing of the two, Soo-kyoung, asks Ji-hae to do her a favor - write a love letter to Sang-min. Ji-hae pours out her own feelings for him on paper, but sadly in her friend’s name. Touched by the letter, Sang-min is attracted to Soo-kyoung, and Ji-hae, feeling uncomfortable and even guilty, tries to avoid him. And yet by coincidence or by fate she keeps running into him.

Ji-hae has lived alone with her mom since her childhood, when her dad unexpectedly passed away. Her mom is now on a trip abroad, and to wile away her solitude she starts cleaning the attic. There Ji-hae finds a secret box, in which her mom kept the memorabilia of her first love story of some decades past.”

This is how the flashback to summer in 1968 began..

Joon-ha is visiting his uncle’s home in the countryside during his summer vacation. There he meets Joo-hee and falls in love at first sight. One day, the lovely Joo-hee (Ji-hae’s mom) secretly asks Joon-ha to escort her to a haunted house in the village. Happy and excited to be at her service, Joon-ha meets her at their promised spot. But in an unexpected storm, the two lose their boat and barely manage to return home at a very late hour. Joo-hee gets into big trouble for this incident and is sent back to Seoul. Having parted with Joo-hee without a word of farewell, Joon-ha spends the rest of the summer heavy-hearted.

With summer vacation being over Joon-ha also returns to Seoul. At school, his classmate Tae-su asks him to write a love letter to send to a girl. And who would it be but Joo-hee, Joon-ha’s dream girl. Unable to confess his own summer love story, Joon-ha reluctantly complies with his friend’s request.”

This is one of the nicest korean movie that I’ve ever watched. The plot was a bit unexpected towards the end and this sad love story will probably capture you deep in your hearts. This is an entertaining movie with tears and laughter. And the OST is very nice too.
