Welcome Aboard the Swedish Ship Götheborg
“The original East Indiaman Götheborg was built in 1738 at Terra Nova shipyard in Stockholm. She made three lucrative voyages to China. The third one began on Monday the 14th March 1743. But 36 months later, on the 12th September 1745, everything came to an abrupt end.
After an unusually dramatic trip, she was sighted in the sea approach to Gothenburg harbour on the Swedish west coast. Right in front of expectant merchants and family members, she ran aground on a notorious submerged rock called Hunnebadan. Slowly but surely, she sank. Remarkably, nobody was killed and a large part of the cargo was later rescued.”
The Swedish Ship Götheborg was launched in summer 2003 and two years later, on the 2nd October 2005, she started her long journey to China. This historic journey is now making a return trip back to Sweden. One of the stop is in Singapore: at The Promenade, Vivocity for two weeks (the ship will sail off on 14th January 2007). You should not miss the opportunity to visit the ship to study and feel the historic atmosphere. You can enter the weather deck as well as down to the gun deck.
The ship is no longer open to public. The last date was yesterday, 9th January 2007. But not to worry, you can still take a look at the ship from outside. Or you might as well want to catch the departure of Götheborg on 14 January 2007 at 2pm.
Here are some photos. Do go there and take a look if you have time. I feel that the ship is really a masterpiece.
