Day 4 Hong Kong

Posted on January 16th, 2007 in Place of interests, Travel by yeehan

I arrived in Hong Kong at around 7pm on Day 3. Had dinner in the airport and guess what we had? Asian cuisine (more of Singaporean cuisine) Anyway, by the time we reached the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) hostel, it was already quite late. So, I decided not to go out but to rest early.

Day 4 in Hong Kong was mostly spent on universities. My first visit was around the campus. One word to describe this place: Superb!! The university is at the coastal area, which means it has a sea view. They have a seafront track and field, indoor and outdoor swimming pool, super nice view from all buildings. Have a look below:

In the afternoon, Hong Kong University (HKU) was the next stop. This is the top university in Hong Kong although it’s not as new as HKUST. There are still some unique places about HKU. There’s the Global Lounge where students can relax on the sofas and watch the variety of channels. Not forgetting the old church (I think so).

Transportation in Hong Kong
Hong Kong has a very good public transport system. They have the MTR (similar to Singapore’s MRT). It operates from ard 5 + am till around 1+ am. And some of their buses (which consists of the double decker, green and yellow mini buses) offer 24 hours service!! So, I don’t really have to worry about having to take cab back because I never took a cab in Hong Kong. Travelling in Hong Kong is also more convenient with “Octopus” card. It’s like Singapore’s EasyLink; you can use it to pay bus fare, convenient stores, etc. Just tab and go. The card costs HK$ 150 (1 US$ ~ HK$ 8), with HK$ 100 stored value and HK$ 50 deposit. Or you may want to purchase a HK$ 50 unlimited one day MTR rides (but i don’t think it’s really worth it, since you’ll be travelling on buses as well). Just hope on one of the MTR lines and it’ll get you almost everywhere around Hong Kong. Here’s a nice website of Hong Kong map.

Place of visit
At night, I went up Hong Kong peak. I must say, this is one of the recommended place to go to. Be it in the day or night (I went at night), the Hong Kong skyline view is a scene that will not be forgotten. With the cool breeze and superb buildings lightings, I guess you’ll be captivated by the view. To reach the peak, you can either take bus or the tram. I’ll suggest the tram. =) It’ll take you up the steep slope. And I would suggest you to get a seat. You’ll don’t want to stand. Trust me! The return ride cost HK$ 33. There are a lot of things that you can do at that peak. Here’s the official website. Also, more information about the peak- click here

Anyway, here are some photos:

Another nice building in Hong Kong would be the Hong Kong Exhibition and Convention Centre. It’s the building at the last scene of Jackie Chan’s New Police Story.

This is outside the complex. It’s known as Forever Blooming Bauninia Sculpture. Nearby is the Reunification Monument (not in photo)

Across the sea, you’ll reach Tsim Sha Tsui. You can take ferry or MTR over. The view from Kowloon district on Hong Kong Island is quite different. But both are equally beautiful. (I really like Hong Kong night scenery)

In TST, I went to the Avenue of Stars. It’s similar to US’s Walk of Fame. There are lots of famous chinese actors and actresses. Managed to spot a few like Andy Lau and Jackie Chan.

This is the main entrance sculpture.
